| Only for photosynthesis something is provided but referring to starch accumulation. Concerning to this last point starch accumulation in Si treated plants is tentatively explained on the basis of an increased transpiration due to Si accumulation in the leaves. However decrease of Na toxicity is possibly due to a decreased transpiration rate (discussed elsewhere and suggested by others); transpiration is not evaluated. So the authors should take a clear decision on which is the real Si effect in their experimental set-up. It is clear, also from the huge literature on the subject, that Si effect is manifold and not easily reconducible to a single effect. In the present paper the accumulation of soluble sugars and starch are interesting results as is the idea that Si might promote conversion of soluble sugars to starch when plants are subjected to NaCl stress; however these aspects are not clearly supported by the data (see e.g soluble sugars in Si-Na-treated plants vs. Na-treated plants: no change) and should be sustained by proper evaluation of the metabolic pathways involving these molecules. |
